In the beginning of the story, Kate breaks her arm because her brother Josh dared her to go down to the hobo camp. Kate runs into two hobos and gets scared and runs. She trips on a root of a tree and breaks her arm. After a few weeks with her broken arm, Kate gets really bored. She meets a boy named Oscar who has a broken leg, in a cast. Kate and Oscar form "Cripples Incorporated" and search for the Secret. The Secret is a rumor that there is a secret room in or around Kate's house that had been used as a station on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. Kate and Oscar spend all their time looking for the Secret. Oscar reads a lot of books about the Underground Railroad to look for clues. Kate investigates her house when Oscar isn't there. In one bedroom in Kate's house, Kate found a saying written by the previous owners of the house that helps her to better understand the Secret. But soon the fun will end because something happens to Kate and her mother won't let her look for the Secret any longer.
I liked this book a lot. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was very interesting and once you started reading it you can't seem to stop. The beginning of the story got a little boring but it got way better as the story went on.

Great Read Aloud
As a child I received this book as a gift for Christmas from our local Ashtabula book store. It has great value to me as my family is from the Ashtabula area and this is where the book takes place. I usually read this to my class during Black History Month, and my students are always on the edge of their seats trying to figure out the secret. It's a wonderful book, and I am so happy that it is still in print!!! The sequel, The Diary of the Strawbridge Place, is also very good.

it was great all around
the story had a great plot. i loved the setting. It is great for all ages (11-and up). it is the best book i have ever read. it telled everything in detail and it didn't leave you hanging at the end.

Winning With Index Mutual Funds: How to Beat Wall Street at Its Own Game
Published in Hardcover by AMACOM (February, 1997)
Authors: Jerry Tweddell and Jack Pierce
Average review score:

This is a very readable book on index investing.
I liked this book on its readability. I scanned a few other books on indexing; they were too dry for me.

Outstanding Introduction to Index funds
A great introduction to index funds. Two other texts that complement this book are John Bogle's "Bogle on Mutual Funds" and the seminal "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" by Burton Malkiel. The case against actively managed mutual (or pension) funds is persuasively presented by any of these three but the Tweddell/Pierce treatment is more practical. The only criticism is that its list of index funds is already out of date. Fidelity, Merrill Lynch, etc. have recently joined the fray and some funds have closed

I wish I had read something like this ten years ago.
Great book--readable, troubling, eye-opening. I wish that I had read something like this ten years ago

A terrific book
Over 200 beautiful color photographs.. stunning. Cloth Emerald green cover is beautiful, too.

A look at the pacific NW from unusual angles.

A Great Gift
Purchasing a first class photographer's books, when well printed, is a unique opportunity to own fine art at bargain prices and makes an outstanding gift. Morton Beebe's Cascadia is an opportunity to acquire world class photography and an outstanding visual essay on one of the most dynamic areas in North America at an incredibly reasonable price. The first class Japanese printing contracted by Harry Abrams illustrates some of Mr. Beebe's fine pieces with an exceptionally high quality. Among the photographs which are highlights of the book include a stunning skyline of view of Seattle at sunset, an exceptional graphic image of the Washington Mutual Tower, unique photographs of Orca whales, an beautiful view of Echo Bay in British Columbia, portraits of the logs floating outside of a Washington mill in winter waiting to be cut up with seagulls overhead and on the logs and numerous other exceptional photographs. If you have a friend or member of your family who's interested in the Pacific Northwest, Cascadia is an excellent candidate gift.

The Dow Jones Averages 1885-1995 (Serial)
Published in Hardcover by Irwin Professional Pub (June, 1996)
Author: Phyllis S. Pierce
Average review score:

A whole bunch of numbers
If you need this book, you know you need it. It contains a daily history of the Dow Jones Averages (Industrials, Transports/Rails, Utilities and Bonds (early is 40 bond, later is 20 bond). Of particular value is the very early history of the initial Dow Averages (pre-modern era). The list of component stocks, and dates of changes is also very useful. Watching them pull the moribund typewriter/adding machine company, International Business Machines, from the DJIA, and then re-insert it (after it was a behemoth, on the verge of playing dinosaur to the DEC minicomputers) is great reading.

There are several introductory articles included that are why I only rate it at 4 stars. Those articles aren't worth the time to read.

A few words of caution: While this is a great resource for those wanting to check on data, it is not perfect. First, it does not contain the Dow Jones 65 Stock Composite Average. It also does not contain the history of the divisors. Many of the pages are copies of pages from earlier editions. That means that it is not unusual to find digits that are only partially readable. Finally, the book does contain errors. A simple check of whether the close is between the high and the low will find quite a few.

As I type, it is almost the end of 2001, and the 1885-2000 update has not yet been published. That is late, and is a concern.

great

Elijah Pierce, Woodcarver
Published in Paperback by Columbus Museum of Art (November, 1992)
Author: Norma Roberts
Average review score:

Had great stuff!!
The book had great insight of who Elijah Wood is. Though it didn't get that personal it still was very great!!

African American Fok Artist
If you are into folk art, African-American cultural contributions, religious themed art, a woodcarver or just someone who appreciates intricate woodcarving details than you will enjoy and should seek this book. Elijah Pierce's sculptures are broken down into various categories including free standing carvings, religious reliefs, secular reliefs and autobigraphical works. This catologue is from an exhibition from the Columbus Museum of Art that displayed Elijah Pierce's works in 1973, eleven years before his death. They have the largest collection of his works , it features over 200 pieces. His style was unbelieveable, his panels filled with incredible detail, full of emotion, religious fervor and cultural pride. In the book you will see his tribute in wood to sports hero's too like football player Archie Griffin or boxing legend Joe Lewis. Many of the works are patriotic themed , including tributes to Abraham Lincoln. Martin Luther King, The Kennedy's and Paul Revere. One of the things that sets Elijah Pierce apart, besides his technical carving skills, was his colorful painting of the wooden figures or reliefs. He used many different colors including bright solid tones that brought more life into the wood. There are several essays included and the mystical qualities of wood are discusses by him and several other woodcarvers. His life is discussed in the essays, including his hardships as well as his successes, with the end result being an intimate portrait of the artist . Being a man of tremendous religious conviction, coming from a strong religious family, a preacher himself, his carvings became his pulpit. The religious fervor in his carvings are amazing and the biblical stories in wood come to life and jump out at you. His "Book of Wood" is an astounding series of panels bound together and was used on occasion for his sermons but eventually housed in his barbershop where it was the centerpiece of Pierce's art display's. You must find this book to see all the exquisite works of art this master woodcarver created, it will astound you in it's simplicity , varied subject matter and asthetic qualities. Elijah Pierce has left a legacy that should not be missed as it reflects the everyman qualities of the American spirit. Highly recommended for art enthusiasts, folk art collectors, teachers and especially woodcarvers, as it is very inspirational.

Second Row, Piano Side: With Humor, Heartache, and Hope: Chonda Pierce Tells Her Story
Published in Paperback by Nazarene Publishing House (March, 1996)
Author: Chonda Pierce
Average review score:

Here's a gal with a positive attitude and a joyful heart
After seeing Chonda live in Chicago last year, I am convinced that she's our very own comedian angel sent by God to wake and shake us! Chonda's book is a true inspiration, but actually listening to her speak and sing is an even bigger treat. It's hard to find her tapes, both video and audio, but definately worthwhile to search for. I've purchased three extra books and tapes to give as presents. This is truly a MUST Buy for Christian women of all walks of life.

An amazing testimony of Christian strength
I saw Chonda at a Women of Faith gathering in Cincinnati. She moved 15,000 women to tears of laughter and emotion. If she is ever speaking in your area, go see her! Truly amazing and inspiring.

One of the best Christian books I have read
This is by far one of the best Christian books I have read. I laughed until I cried, and then I cried until I laughed. Chonda uses humor and then the incredible story of her life to make us all realize that God is indeed in control
